Dr Janet Horrocks: Developing independent and creative thinking through active, authentic and collaborative learning

Event Details

9th of August 2023 | 10.00 -11.00 am | online

Event Summary

Developing the ability of students to think creatively and solve problems is an integral part of a university course. In this session, Dr Janet Horrocks, will share with participants how they have sought to do this in the Biomedical Science programme at Abertay University, by developing a module based on a simulated request from a company. The students work in teams to devise a possible solution and then test their ideas in the laboratory. The groups can devise their own approaches, implement them and then review the outcome. The students are supported with short group meetings after each lab session where the staff facilitate their exploration of problems. These short meetings focus on the student learning, provide scaffolding, and build confidence. The session will enable participants to explore how this can be adapted to their own disciplines by identifying suitable scenarios.
